In the sun-soaked Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam, the Wageningen touch rugby players delivered another outstanding performance. During the touch tournament — part of the Next Generation Games, which also featured sports such as tag American football and pickleball — RC Wageningen secured the unofficial national T1 touch rugby title for the second year in a row.
RCW entered two teams: a social team and a more competitive team in the cup pool. The social side kicked things off and started strong, claiming victories over the Almere Mothers and Alkmaar. A narrow loss against the Almere mixed team meant they finished as runners-up in their pool.
Next up was RCW’s competitive team. In a tense opening match, they edged past Amsterdam with a narrow win. This was followed by a physically intense match against the Bassets from Sassenheim. The opposition regularly pushed the boundaries with robust play — something unnecessary and not allowed in touch rugby — but the Wageningen side stayed focused and secured the victory. The final match against Breda was also convincingly won.
With this impressive run, the trophy cabinet above the bar has been updated once again: Friday Night Touch has now claimed its second national title in two years!
Open to Everyone
Friday Night Touch is a diverse and international group made up of rugby players, parents of rugby-playing children, and players who—for example due to work or injuries—prefer not to play contact rugby. Ages range from 21 to 65, and both experienced players and complete beginners are welcome.
The group gathers every Friday evening at 7:30 pm for a cup of coffee or tea, followed by a touch rugby session starting at 8:00 pm. No prior experience or top-level fitness is required — enjoyment always comes first!
