Bernard Gildemacher, scheidsrechter van de eerste Nederlandse damesrugbywedstrijd tussen Rugby Club Wageningen en ESRC Elephants is 18 februari j.l. op 74 jarige leeftijd overleden. Bernard was een onverschrokken tackelende driekwarter die door zijn speelstijl enkele blessures opliep. Om in zijn herstelperiodes betrokken te blijven bij het rugby volgde hij de scheidsrechterscursus en floot regelmatig rugbywedstrijden in Wageningen en bij clubs in de omgeving. Toen het idee ontstond om tijdens het eerste lustrum van RC Wageningen in 1975 een damesrugbywedstrijd te spelen, een unicum destijds, was hij dan ook de onbetwiste scheidsrechterskeuze. Het 50 jarig jubileum van deze wedstrijd wordt op 13 april 2025 gevierd, wat Bernard helaas net niet heeft kunnen meemaken. We wensen de familie veel sterkte en zullen in clubverband stil staan bij het wegvallen van Bernard.
Bernard Gildemacher, referee of the first Dutch women’s rugby match between Rugby Club Wageningen and ESRC Elephants, has passed away February 18 at the age of 74. Bernard was a fearless tackling three-quarter player who suffered several injuries due to his playing style. In order to remain involved in rugby during his recovery periods, he followed the referee course and regularly refereed rugby matches in Wageningen and at clubs in the area. When the idea arose to play a women’s rugby match during the first lustrum of RC Wageningen in 1975, a unique event at the time, he was the undisputed choice of referee. The 50th anniversary of this match will be celebrated on April 13, 2025, which Bernard unfortunately was unable to experience. We wish the family much strength and will commemorate Bernard’s passing as a club.
