De tribunes van het Nationaal Rugby Centrum Amsterdam kleurden paars zondag 29 maart. Omdat de turven, benjamins en mini’s enorm veel loten hadden verkocht tijdens de Grote Clubactie, was er budget over voor nóg een uitstapje. En dus stapten 47 kinderen en 39 ouders zondagochtend in een touringcar op weg naar de het nationale rugbystadion.
Voor de jonge RCW’ers lag meer in het verschiet dan alleen de interland Nederland-Portugal kijken: alle 39 hadden ze een actieve rol: als mascotte om de Oranjedames tijdens het volkslied te begeleiden, als vlaggendrager of als ballenkind.
Al vlot was duidelijk dat de Portugese dames niet waren opgewassen tegen de Nederlandse vijftien. Bij rust stond al een afgetekende 28-0 op het scorebord.
In de 59ste minuut was er voor het paarse RCW-legioen extra reden om te juichen: Anniek Nauta kwam het veld in. De Bennekomse zette in 2018 in Wageningen haar eerste stappen op een rugbyveld. Inmiddels speelt ze voor RC Waterland én voor Oranje. Nadat bij een eindstand 59-0 was afgefloten, nam Anniek alle tijd voor een fotosessie met de jongste leden van haar oude club.
Nadat alle sokken, shirts en broekjes waren gesigneerd, stond de bus te wachten. Waarschijnlijk was de Wageningse terugreis een stuk gezelliger dan die van Portugal.

The stands of the National Rugby Centre in Amsterdam turned purple on Sunday, March 29. Because the Turven, Benjamins, and Minis had sold a huge number of raffle tickets during the Grote Clubactie, there was enough budget left for yet another outing. So, early Sunday morning, 47 children and 39 parents boarded a coach headed for the national rugby stadium.
For the young RCW members, there was more in store than just watching the Netherlands vs. Portugal international match: all 39 of them had an active role—serving as mascots to accompany the Dutch women’s team during the national anthem, as flag bearers, or as ball kids.
It quickly became clear that the Portuguese women were no match for the Dutch side. By halftime, the scoreboard already showed a convincing 28–0 lead.
In the 59th minute, there was even more reason for the purple RCW supporters to cheer: Anniek Nauta came onto the field. The player from Bennekom took her first steps on a rugby field in Wageningen in 2018. She now plays for RC Waterland as well as for the Dutch national team. After the final whistle blew at 59–0, Anniek took plenty of time for a photo session with the youngest members of her former club.
Once all the socks, shirts, and shorts had been signed, the bus was waiting. The return trip to Wageningen was probably a lot more cheerful than the one back to Portugal.
