Nadat de jeugdspelers van het Bevrijdingstoernooi het veld hadden geruimd, namen de senioren het stokje direct over. ’s Ochtends waren de gasten uit Surrey, de Old Tiffinians, al aangekomen en hadden al snel de nodige Dutch courage achter de kiezen. Toch wisten ze vrij eenvoudig de wedstrijd tegen de heren van RCW te winnen, met een eindstand van 36-76. Die overwinning werd dusdanig uitbundig gevierd met zang en bier dat extra trips naar de groothandel nodig waren om te zorgen dat er genoeg op voorraad bleef voor de laatste dag van het lustrum. De band “The Doggy Few” maakte het nog eens extra feestelijk, door een paar sets met erg dansbare, klassieke Ierse liedjes te verzorgen. Op een aantal daarvan hadden de gasten alternatieve teksten, die luidkeels werden meegezongen.
Na de internationale wedstrijd was het tijd voor de oude ballen – voor de traditionele wedstrijden tussen jong en oud RCW-spelers waren zowel de dames als de heren goed vertegenwoordigd. Natuurlijk ontbrak de traditionele borrel tijdens de rust niet! Na afloop volgde een uitgebreide BBQ, meer muziek van de Doggy Few, zang en dans – een mooi feest.
De leider van de Tiffinians en Steven Schreuder namens RCW wisselden daarna de nodige club-parafernalia uit, waaronder een shirt met “RC Wageningen” en nummer “55” op de rug. Dit werd gevolgd door een traditionele ‘boat race”, waarin de Engelsen alweer wonnen door in 20 seconden een fles Beerenburg tot de bodem leeg te drinken. Na nog een geslaagde demonstratie “Britse haka” en grootschalige (deels onvrijwillige) uitwisseling van shirtjes en petjes vertrokken de gasten per bus naar hun verblijf in Eindhoven.
Hoewel het een mooie dag was voor rugby, werd het ’s avonds snel fris en besloot de organisatie het feest voort te zetten in de Stal – daar bleef het tot in de kleine uurtjes gezellig.
After the youth players of the Liberation Tournament had cleared the field, the seniors immediately took over. In the morning, the guests from Surrey, the Old Tiffinians, had already arrived and quickly had the necessary Dutch courage under their belts. Nevertheless, they managed to win the match against the men of RCW quite easily, with a final score of 36-76. This victory was celebrated so exuberantly with singing and beer that extra trips to the wholesaler were necessary to ensure that there was enough in stock for the last day of the lustrum. The band “The Doggy Few” made it even more festive, by providing a few sets of very danceable, classic Irish songs. The guests had alternative lyrics to a number of them, which were sung along to loudly.
After the international match, it was time for the old balls – for the traditional matches between young and old RCW players, both the ladies and the men were well represented. Of course, the traditional drinks during the break were not missing! Afterwards, there was an extensive BBQ, more music from the Doggy Few, singing and dancing – a great party.
The leader of the Tiffinians and Steven Schreuder on behalf of RCW then exchanged the necessary club paraphernalia, including a shirt with “RC Wageningen” and number “55” on the back. This was followed by a traditional ‘boat race’, in which the English won again by drinking a bottle of Beerenburg to the bottom in 20 seconds. After another successful demonstration of “British haka” and a large-scale (partly involuntary) exchange of shirts and caps, the guests left by bus for their accommodation in Eindhoven.
Although it was a beautiful day for rugby, it quickly became chilly in the evening and the organization decided to continue the party in the Stal – where it remained cozy until the early hours.
