Zaterdag 18 maart speelden de Junioren de inhaalwedstrijd van de week ervoor, die helaas niet gespeeld kon worden op een mooi wit veld. Deze wedstrijd tegen Eemland JU 2 werd gespeeld in Doetinchem, waar uiteindelijk Lange Daan onze Ref was omdat de Ref die gevraagd was met een kapot vliegtuig in Polen stond. Maar voor het eerst in eeuwen stonden we weer eens lekker in het zonnetje aan de zijlijn naar de Wiwa’s te kijken, die geheel volgens verwachting weer traag op gang kwamen. Met 13 spelers en 2 geleende spelers uiteindelijk met z’n 15-en. En wat liep daar nou voor een kleine smurf tussen de Wiwa’s? Dat was Willem, onze scrumhalf van de Cubs. En laat die nou zo klein zijn dat die tussen de benen van de verdedigers door kan om een try te drukken… Naast Willem hebben Yairo en Nicolas ook nog try’s gedrukt en werd het na een heftige eindsprint uiteindelijk gelijk spel met 40-40. Willem werd als Cub tussen de junioren met ook nog een try achter zijn naam natuurlijk gekozen als “ Man off the match “. Go Willem!
Op zaterdag 25 maart speelden we tegen The Rams JU 1 in Apeldoorn . Bij aankomst op het veld was het commentaar “nou dit is erger dan het knollenveld in Havelte” – oftewel, “met de bek in de drek”. Al na de warming up kon ik Joep, Thijs P en Ties niet meer onderscheiden door de modder. De twee teams waren erg aan elkaar gewaagd en kwamen over en weer steeds dicht bij de try line, waarna er weer een turnover volgde en we weer de andere kant op gingen. Zo kwamen de try’s om en om en wist Nicolas 2 conversies te verzilveren. De Rams werden lichtelijk gepikeerd door hun kleine achterstand, waarop Jeremy zei dat het team dat als eerste lelijk gaat doen, verliest . En zo kreeg hij gelijk. Door de verzilverde conversies en de try’s van Bram en Nicolas konden de Wiwa’s deze wedstrijd op hun naam zetten met 19-15. Wat was het spannend! Een aantal ouders en de coach hebben er bijna een hartverlamming aan overgehouden. Als laatste mocht Bram als “man of the match” gekozen door The Rams een Adje fristie trekken en won hij ook nog de derde helft. Jeremy had een andere keuze gemaakt voor de “man off the match”, namelijk Jessie, omdat die een heel positieve instelling meegenomen had!
Nu blijken we ook nog tweede van de poule te zijn en hebben we nog als kerstboom op de taart de kruisfinales te spelen!

He was so small that he can pass between the legs of the defenders to press a try… In addition to Willem, Yairo and Nicolas also pressed try’s and after a fierce final sprint it eventually became a draw with 40-40. As a Cub between the juniors with a try behind his name, Willem was of course chosen as “Man off the match”. Go Willem!
On Saturday 25 March we played against The Rams JU 1 in Apeldoorn. On arrival at the field, the comment was “well this is worse than the potato field in Havelte” – in other words, “with the mouth in the mud”. Already after the warm up I could no longer distinguish Joep, Thijs P and Ties because of the mud. The two teams were very evenly matched, getting close to the try line again and again, then another turnover followed and we went the other way. The tries came alternately and Nicolas managed to cash in 2 conversions. The Rams were slightly annoyed by their small deficit, prompting Jeremy to say that the team that gets ugly first loses. And he was right. Thanks to the conversions and the tries of Bram and Nicolas, the Wiwas were able to win this match with 19-15. It was very exciting! A number of parents and the coach almost suffered a heart attack. Finally, Bram was chosen as “man of the match” by The Rams to pull an Adje fristie and he also won the third half. Jeremy had made a different choice for the “man off the match”, namely Jessie, because she brought a very positive attitude!
Now we also appear to be second in the group and we still have to play the cross finals as a Christmas tree on the cake!
