Op zondag 13 april was het dan eindelijk zover: het evenement rond 50 jaar damesrugby, al maanden in voorbereiding! Al vroeg op de zondagochtend werd het clubhuis geopend met de eerste vrijwilligers om de opbouw te starten en koffie te zetten. Bij SKV werd een prachtige expositie over dames rugby opgebouwd, waar de vele bezoekers van de dag konden genieten van historisch materiaal uit alle uithoeken van Nederland die het verhaal over dames rugby vertelden.
De dag werd afgetrapt door de jonge meiden van de Girls Day. Meer dan 50 meisjes van de leeftijd van +- 4 – 12 jaar waren uit heel Nederland naar Wageningen gekomen om samen te rugbyen. Veel Wageningse meiden hadden ook vriendinnen meegenomen om die kennis te laten maken met de rugbysport. De deskundige trainers hadden een super programma georganiseerd en de poffertjes achteraf waren overheerlijk.
De Purple Lions, het cluster team van dames 2, kwamen vervolgens in actie tegen de Foeste Moiden uit Noord Holland – voor het eerst in de nieuwe shirts gesponsord door Fysiotherapie Vis. Onder luid gejuich kwamen ze het veld op, de meiden van de Girls Day hadden speciaal een erehaag gemaakt om de teams aan te moedigen. De Purple Lions moesten nog even wakker worden en kregen al gauw een try tegen, maar kwamen vervolgens goed in de wedstrijd. Bij de tegenstander vielen wat speelsters uit, maar de Wageningen/Eindhoven combinatie vulde aan waardoor de wedstrijd voor beide teams leuk bleef. Eindscore was 48-34, winst voor de Purple Lions!
Daarna was het tijd voor een speciale ceremonie met de rugby dames van het eerste uur. Sander Dijkslag sprak het publiek toe en stelde de ‘Godmothers van damesrugby Nederland’ voor! Van beide clubs, RCW & de Elephants, waren dames van het eerste uur aanwezig om een prachtige paarse magnolia te onthullen, gesponsord door Connie Ettema, ter herinnering aan de eerste dames rugbywedstrijd in Nederland, 50 jaar geleden in Wageningen.
Daarna ging iedereen snel weer terug naar het veld om de talenten voor de toekomst aan te moedigen. De dames van Nederland Onder 18, waaronder de Wageningse Mare Schreuder, speelden een onderlinge trainingswedstrijd. Ondertussen werd de groep toegestroomd publiek steeds groter, de belangstelling was groot en fantastisch om deze talentvolle spelers in actie te zien. Toen was het tijd voor de laatste wedstrijd van de dag: RCW tegen LSRG. Hier hadden beide teams lang naar uitgekeken en niet zonder reden: de afgelopen 3 (!) ontmoetingen waren in een gelijkspel geëindigd en Wageningen was vastbesloten om dit recht te zetten. Een paar spelers hadden eerder al met de Purple Lions meegespeeld, maar dit was qua fitness niet te zien want Wageningen startte vol vuur! Het was genieten voor de honderden mensen langs de kant, de zon kwam er bij en er werd geweldig gespeeld door beide partijen. Het hele paarse team stond geweldig te ballen samen, Pie speelde voor het eerst mee bij het eerste en flanker A3 & winger Maria stonden ook eindelijk weer op het wedstrijd veld na lange blessures. LSRG was sterk in de (penalty)kicks, maar uiteindelijk was het Wageningen die de score naar zich toe trok daar een aantal sterkte team try’s en conversies van kicker Siri. Eindscore: 21-11!
Vervolgens stond er nog een belangrijk moment gepland en nam Sander Dijkslag het woord op het podium in de feesttent. Hier stelde hij Fulco Stallman voor, die namens Society College, de shirt sponsor van Oranje dames, meer dan 50 caps kwam uitreiken aan oud Nederlands team speelsters. Dit is jarenlang niet gebeurd en daarom was er nog wat recht te zetten. Veel dames, waaronder ook Wageningse speelsters die in de eerste dames interland ter wereld in 1982 hebben gespeeld, kregen eindelijk hun welverdiende aandenken aan hun tijd in het nationale team. Annelies Acda sloot af met de inspirerende woorden van de Nieuw-Zeelandse Ruby Tui: “They said no one cared about women’s rugby, but guess what? We are here, we’re going nowhere.”.
En dat was exact het sentiment van de dag: het samenbrengen van al die Generations Purple, van jong tot oud, om te genieten van onze fantastische sport. Dat had niet gekund zonder alle fantastische vrijwilligers die zich hebben ingezet, ontzettend bedankt voor alle hulp! Op naar de volgende 50 jaar!
De Volkskrant was ook aanwezig en wijdde 2 pagina’s aan het evenement.
On Sunday 13 April, the time had finally come: the event around 50 years of women’s rugby, months in the making! Early on Sunday morning, the clubhouse was opened with the first volunteers to start the construction and make coffee. At SKV, a beautiful exhibition about women’s rugby was set up, where the many visitors of the day could enjoy historical material from all corners of the Netherlands that told the story of women’s rugby.
The day was kicked off by the young girls of the Girls Day. More than 50 girls aged +- 4 – 12 had come to Wageningen from all over the Netherlands to play rugby together. Many girls from Wageningen had also brought friends to introduce them to the sport of rugby. The expert trainers had organised a great programme and the mini pancakes afterwards were delicious.
The Purple Lions, the cluster team of women’s 2, then came into action against the Foeste Moiden from Noord Holland – for the first time in the new shirts sponsored by Fysiotherapie Vis. They entered the field to loud cheers, the girls from Girls Day had specially made a guard of honour to encourage the teams. The Purple Lions had to wake up and soon conceded a try, but then got into the game well. The opponent lost some players, but the Wageningen/Eindhoven combination filled in, which kept the game fun for both teams. The final score was 48-34, victory for the Purple Lions!
Then it was time for a special ceremony with the rugby women from the very beginning. Sander Dijkslag addressed the audience and introduced the ‘Godmothers of women’s rugby in the Netherlands’! From both clubs, RCW & the Elephants, women from the very beginning were present to unveil a beautiful purple magnolia, sponsored by Connie Ettema, in memory of the first women’s rugby match in the Netherlands, 50 years ago in Wageningen.
Then everyone quickly went back to the field to encourage the talents for the future. The women of the Netherlands Under 18, including Wageningen’s Mare Schreuder, played a training match among themselves. In the meantime, the group of spectators that had gathered grew larger and larger, the interest was great and fantastic to see these talented players in action. Then it was time for the last match of the day: RCW against LSRG. Both teams had been looking forward to this for a long time and not without reason: the last 3 (!) encounters had ended in a draw and Wageningen was determined to put this right. A few players had previously played with the Purple Lions, but this was not visible in terms of fitness because Wageningen started with great fire! It was enjoyable for the hundreds of people along the side, the sun came out and both parties played fantastically. The entire purple team was playing great together, Pie played for the first team for the first time and flanker A3 & winger Maria were finally back on the match field after long injuries. LSRG was strong in the (penalty) kicks, but in the end it was Wageningen who pulled the score towards them with a number of strong team tries and conversions from kicker Siri. Final score: 21-11!
Then another important moment was planned and Sander Dijkslag took the floor on the podium in the party tent. Here he introduced Fulco Stallman, who on behalf of Society College, the shirt sponsor of Oranje women, came to hand out more than 50 caps to former Dutch team players. This had not happened for years and therefore there was still some rectification to be done. Many women, including Wageningen players who played in the first women’s international match in the world in 1982, finally received their well-deserved souvenir of their time in the national team. Annelies Acda concluded with the inspiring words of New Zealand’s Ruby Tui: “They said no one cared about women’s rugby, but guess what? We are here, we’re going nowhere.”.
And that was exactly the sentiment of the day: bringing together all those Generations Purple, from young to old, to enjoy our fantastic sport. That would not have been possible without all the fantastic volunteers who have committed themselves, thank you very much for all the help! On to the next 50 years!
