in het weekend van 9 december stond er voor een aantal RCW Dames een bijzondere wedstrijd op de planning, in Griekenland! Sinds afgelopen zomer is er in Nederland een groep dames die trainen om Rugby League te proberen en een nationaal team op te richten. Rugby League is een variant van rugby die een net iets anders spelverloop heeft. Zo heeft ieder team 13 spelers in het veld, zijn scrums en line outs minder belangrijk en moet de bal na vijf tackles naar de tegenstander. Het is vooral bekend in landen als Australië, Nieuw-Zeeland & Engeland, maar krijgt in Nederland ook steeds meer bekendheid!
Vanuit onze club werden Senta, Dunja, Arjanne (Ari) en Chantal geselecteerd om deel te nemen aan de eerste interland van het dames rugby league team in de Nederlandse geschiedenis. Er waren twee wedstrijden, van het hoofdteam en het A-team; de Wageningse dames speelden voor het A-team.
Op 8 december vlogen we naar Griekenland, maar dat ging niet helemaal volgens plan. Halverwege de vlucht werkte een koelelement van de motor niet meer, waardoor het vliegtuig weer om moest draaien. Gelukkig stond er op Schiphol een nieuw vliegtuig klaar en kon de reis voortgezet worden. Zaterdagochtend werd Athene verkend, Dunja vervulde hierbij de rol van reisleider en vertelde van alles over de geschiedenis van de stad. ‘s Middags stond in het thema van klaarmaken en naar de wedstrijd, om vervolgens een mooie pot neer te zetten. We kregen wat penalty’s tegen, voornamelijk voor hoge tackles – we dachten eindelijk hoog te mogen tackelen, maar dat was helemaal niet het geval! De score is bij de tegenstander op 0 gebleven, want ondanks het feit dat Griekenland beter wist hoe het spel werkte, wisten wij heel goed hoe we moesten verdedigen. Dunja maakte een mooie break, die Ari af kon maken met een try. Met mooi samenspel was de eindscore 0-32. Na de wedstrijd stond het bier al koud en de pizza warm, een voorbode voor een hele gezellige avond!
Zondag hebben we de stad verder verkend, om vervolgens de reis af te maken door de zonsondergang te bekijken op de apenrots. Maandagochtend vlogen we weer terug, deze reis verliep een stuk soepeler dan de heenweg. Al met al was dit een mooie ervaring!
On the weekend of December 9, a special competition was planned for a number of RCW Ladies in Greece! Since last summer there has been a group of ladies in the Netherlands who have been training to try Rugby League and start a national team. Rugby League is a variant of rugby that has a slightly different gameplay. For example, each team has 13 players on the field, scrums and line outs are less important and the ball has to go to the opponent after five tackles. It is mainly known in countries such as Australia, New Zealand & England, but is also becoming increasingly known in the Netherlands!
From our club, Senta, Dunja, Arjanne (Ari) and Chantal were selected to participate in the first international match of the women’s rugby league team in Dutch history. There were two matches, of the main team and the A team; the Wageningen ladies played for the A-team.
On December 8 we flew to Greece, but that didn’t go entirely according to plan. Halfway through the flight, an engine cooling element stopped working, forcing the plane to turn around again. Fortunately, a new plane was ready at Schiphol and the journey could be continued. Athens was explored on Saturday morning, Dunja played the role of tour guide and told all about the history of the city. The theme of the afternoon was getting ready and going to the match, and then setting up a nice pot.
We conceded some penalties, mainly for high tackles – we thought we were finally allowed to tackle high, but that wasn’t the case at all! The opponent’s score remained at 0, because despite the fact that Greece knew better how the game worked, we knew very well how to defend. Dunja made a nice break, which Ari was able to finish with a try. With beautiful teamwork the final score was 0-32. After the match the beer was cold and the pizza was warm, a harbinger of a very enjoyable evening!
On Sunday we explored the city further, then finished the trip by watching the sunset on the monkey rock. We flew back on Monday morning, this journey went a lot smoother than the outward journey. All in all this was a wonderful experience!
