Op zondag 25 september speelden de heren en dames van Rugby Club Wageningen allebei thuis en daarmee was de eerste Super Sunday meteen een feit. Voor de heren was dit de tweede wedstrijd van het seizoen, voor de dames de eerste.
Het weer was fantastisch, zowel de dames als de heren hadden een goed gevulde line-up met voldoende wissels en bovendien werden de nieuwe shirts gepresenteerd. Daarmee was aan alle voorwaarden voor een gezellige en succesvolle rugbydag voldaan.
De heren hesen zich in hun nieuwe shirts, met daarop als trotse sponsor VPVA Notarissen. Zij mochten om 13.30 uur aantreden tegen RC Dwingeloo. Dwingeloo had helaas te weinig spelers om 15 man op de mat te kunnen brengen, maar Wageningen vulde vanzelfsprekend het tekort aan spelers van Dwingeloo aan om toch een goede pot rugby te spelen. Hier kwamen de nieuwe shirts meteen goed van pas, want doordat ze dubbelzijdig bedrukt zijn, konden de spelers die moesten aanvullen bij Dwingeloo, gewoon in hun eigen shirt spelen, maar dan met de witte kant buiten. Er werd hard gestreden om de eerste winstpunten binnen te halen en met succes: Wageningen wist de wedstrijd naar zijn hand te zetten en won met grote cijfers, 51-14. Er werd door maar liefst 5 spelers voor het eerst gescoord en Dolf, die met zijn 17 jaar de jongste op het veld was en zijn eerste seizoen voor de senioren uitkomt, werd man of the match. Het werd een prachtige derde helft, met gezang, bier en chocomel en meer zon en rugby kijken – want daarna mochten de dames laten zien wat ze waard waren.
De dames van Wageningen kwamen met wat gezonde spanning het veld op. Het is dit seizoen nog even aftasten hoe ze zich verhouden tot de andere teams in de tweede klasse. De dames zijn namelijk vorig jaar gepromoveerd vanuit de 3e klasse en de tegenstander SOP (Scrumbocks, Obelix, Pigs combinatie) is vorig jaar gedegradeerd vanuit de eerste klasse. Het werd echter al snel duidelijk dat ook hier Wageningen de bovenliggende partij was. De eerste scrum, ingegooid door SOP, werd direct gewonnen door Wageningen en daarmee was de toon wel gezet. De eindstand was uiteindelijk 69-5 en Arjanne werd woman of the match, nadat ze 5 tries had gescoord en nog veel meer breaks had gemaakt. Op de vraag waar ze al die breaks vandaan haalde, antwoordde ze: “Ik was super brak en mijn passes waren dramatisch, dus besloot ik dat ik beter niet kon passen dan iedere keer van die slechte ballen te gooien….” Ieder nadeel heb zijn voordeel, zullen we maar zeggen.
En daarmee hebben alle teams die dit weekend in het nieuw gespeeld hebben- Cubs, heren en dames – ook allemaal met grote cijfers gewonnen. En daar zijn we best trots op. De shirts zijn geleverd door Canterbury. Door wereldwijde productie- en leveringsproblemen in de textiel-industrie was het nog lang spannend of de shirts op tijd binnen zouden zijn voor de eerste Super Sunday. Echter, Canterbury wist de 8 (!) teamkits varierend van de allerkleinste tot de allergrootste maten allemaal in de afgelopen weken in Wageningen te krijgen, waarvoor hulde! We zijn dik tevreden met de kwaliteit en de uitstraling van deze shirts.
Na de wedstrijd van de dames ging het feest nog lang door. De sponsor van de dames, het “Vrijheidskwartier”, werd vertegenwoordigd door Laura Kaper. Zij nam enthousiast het ingelijste shirt in ontvangst en gaf aan “trots te zijn om dit prachtige team te mogen ondersteunen”. Vervolgens bood ze een fust bier aan en daar werd nog lang van genoten. SOP liet zich in de derde helft niet onbetuigd in hun ‘schoonmaak-outfits’ – een mooie grap in relatie tot de afkorting van het cluster – en bleef nog lang naborrelen en zingen. En dat alles mede mogelijk gemaakt doordat er ook nog gekookt werd door een aantal enthousiaste leden om al dat bier een goede bodem te bieden.
Dank aan de sponsoren, de sponsorcommissie, shirt-ontwerper Jeroen, de tegenstanders, de spelers, de trainers en coaches, de supporters, de kookploeg, de barmannen en vrouwen, de zon en de muziek. Laat de rest van het seizoen maar komen!
On Sunday 25 September, the men and women of Rugby Club Wageningen both played at home and with that the first Super Sunday was a fact. For the men this was the second game of the season, for the ladies the first.
The weather was fantastic, both the ladies and the gentlemen had a well-filled line-up with enough substitutions and the new shirts were also presented. All the conditions for a pleasant and successful rugby day were thus met.
The men donned their new shirts, with VPVA Notarissen as the proud sponsor. They were allowed to play against RC Dwingeloo at 1.30 pm. Unfortunately, Dwingeloo had too few players to be able to bring 15 men on the field, but Wageningen naturally made up for the shortage of players from Dwingeloo to still play a good game of rugby. The new shirts immediately came in handy here, because because they are printed on both sides, the players who had to supplement at Dwingeloo could simply play in their own shirt, but with the white side outside. They fought hard to get the first profit points and with success: Wageningen managed to shape the match and won with big numbers, 51-14. No fewer than 5 players scored for the first time and Dolf, who at 17 years old was the youngest on the field and who plays his first season for the seniors, became man of the match. It turned out to be a wonderful third half, with singing, beer and chocolate milk and more sun and watching rugby – because after that the ladies were allowed to show what they were worth.
The ladies from Wageningen entered the field with some healthy tension. This season it is still a question of how they compare to the other teams in the second division. The ladies were promoted last year from the 3rd class and the opponent SOP (Scrumbocks, Obelix, Pigs combination) was relegated last year from the first class. However, it soon became clear that Wageningen was the dominant party here too. The first scrum, thrown in by SOP, was immediately won by Wageningen and that set the tone. The final score was 69-5 and Arjanne became woman of the match, after scoring 5 tries and making many more breaks. When asked where she got all those breaks from, she replied: “I was super hungover and my passes were dramatic, so I decided it was better not to pass than to throw those bad balls every time….” Let’s say that any disadvantage has its advantage.
And with that, all the teams that played in the new this weekend – Cubs, Men and Women – also all won with big numbers. And we are quite proud of that. The shirts are supplied by Canterbury. Due to worldwide production and delivery problems in the textile industry, it was still unclear for a long time whether the shirts would arrive in time for the first Super Sunday. However, Canterbury managed to get the 8 (!) team kits varying from the smallest to the very largest sizes all in Wageningen in recent weeks, for which many kudos! We are very satisfied with the quality and appearance of these shirts.
The party went on for a long time after the ladies’ match. The sponsor of the ladies, the “Vrijheidskwartier”, was represented by Laura Kaper. She enthusiastically accepted the framed shirt and said she was “proud to support this wonderful team”. She then offered a cask of beer, which was enjoyed for a long time to come. In the third half, SOP did not go unnoticed in their ‘cleaning outfits’ – a nice joke in relation to the abbreviation of the cluster – and continued to drink and sing for a long time. And all of this was made possible in part because a number of enthusiastic members also cooked to provide all that beer with a good base.
