Zondag 24 september was de eerste competitiewedstrijd van het seizoen, en de dames hadden er zin in! Een prachtig zonnetje scheen terwijl we naar onze wedstrijden vertrokken. De RCW dames speelden uit tegen URC, en het tweede team, the Purple Lions, speelde thuis in Eindhoven.
Het was de eerste wedstrijd van de RCW dames in de eerste klasse, en voor de wedstrijd waren er toch wat zenuwen. Gelukkig waren er heel wat supporters meegekomen vanuit Wageningen om ons aan te moedigen, en konden we vertrouwen op onze goede voorbereiding. We schoten goed uit de startblokken en in de rust stond het 12-22 in ons voordeel. Na de rust wist URC ons nog behoorlijk onder druk te zetten en moest er hard verdedigd worden. We wisten een try van URC op te houden, en ook een paar moeilijke exit kicks te maken en konden uiteindelijk zelf ook nog een try scoren. Eindstand 24-29, de eerste winst van het seizoen is binnen! Voor de woman of the match heeft Hanna een prachtige paars witte jas gemaakt, die Dunja dit keer mocht aantrekken voor haar geweldige spel vandaag!
In Eindhoven was het ondertussen een SuperSunday, ook de herenteams speelden thuis! Maar om 15:00 was het tijd voor het hoofdprogramma, the Purple Lions. De Lions en Groningen zouden eigenlijk allebei in het zwart spelen, maar dat was niet heel handig dus kwam de oude paarse Wageningen kit weer tevoorschijn! Een dagje voor de wedstrijd werd er nog door Eindhoven gevraagd of wij toevallig toch nog een ref mee konden nemen, en gelukkig was Marco Roos nog beschikbaar. Bedankt voor het fluiten! Het was de eerste wedstrijd samen voor dit cluster, maar we wisten elkaar goed te vinden op het veld. Goede support in de voorwaartsen, en de backs wisten de lijnen mooi te doorbreken. De sterke voorwaartsen liepen door diverse tackles heen, maakten mooie meters en zorgden voor gaten in de Groningse verdediging waardoor tries werden gescoord. Final score, 61-17! Een prachtige winst. Groningen kwam met wat te weinig spelers dus een aantal Purple Lions mochten ook nog bij de tegenstander meespelen, en na de wedstrijd werd de sportiviteit samen gevierd met een zonnige 3e helft!
We zijn ontzettend blij met zo’n droomstart dit seizoen! Twee keer winnen maakte het tot een prachtige rugby dag en we kijken nu al uit naar de komende wedstrijden.

Sunday, September 24th, the first match of the season took place, and the ladies were excited! The sun was shining beautifully as we headed to our matches. The RCW ladies played away against URC, and the second team, the Purple Lions, played at home in Eindhoven.
It was the first match of the season for the RCW ladies in the first division, and there were some nerves before the game. Fortunately, many supporters had come from Wageningen to cheer us on, and we could rely on our good preparation. We got off to a good start, and at halftime, the score was 12-22 in our favor. After the break, URC managed to put us under considerable pressure, and we had to defend hard. We held off a try from URC and managed to make some difficult exit kicks. In the end, we also scored a try ourselves. The final score was 24-29, marking our first win of the season! Hanna had made a beautiful purple and white jacket for the women of the match, which Dunja got to wear this time for her excellent performance today.
Meanwhile, in Eindhoven, it was a SuperSunday as the men’s teams were also playing at home. But at 3:00 PM, it was time for the main event, the Purple Lions.Both teams were supposed to play in black but that was not very practical, so the old purple Wageningen kit was brought to Eindhoven. A day before the match, Eindhoven asked if we could provide a referee, and fortunately, Marco Roos was available. Thanks for officiating! It was the first match together for this cluster, but we found each other well on the field. There was strong support in the forwards, and the backs managed to break through the lines nicely. The robust forwards broke through various tackles, made good meters, and created gaps in the Groningen defense, resulting in tries being scored. The final score was 61-17! A beautiful victory. Groningen had too few players, so some Purple Lions also got to play for the opposition. After the game, sportsmanship and camaraderie was celebrated together with a sunny third half!
We are incredibly pleased with such a dream start to the season! Winning twice made it a wonderful rugby day, and we are already looking forward to the upcoming matches.
